Make Time for Family
'" I was always getting on Mom and Dad's case because they worked all the time and were never around"' (Krakauer 129).
Topic: The Dynamics of Family
I live by one saying, "Family over everything." Family should always be the main priority in a persons life. The bonds created amongst family members are indescribable and should be cherished and cared for. Family is all you have a lot of the time; especially in times of need, when hope is hard to maintain. Family is there for you when the times are rough and do not seem to be getting better. Personally, I would take a bullet for any one of my family members. I love each and every one of my family members to the moon and back. Time should be taken out of a persons free time to spend with their family because you never know when your time with someone close can end. Personally, my aunt, one of our family's best friends, passed away tragically. I reflect on the situation often and wish I took advantage of the time I had with her. Although it may be difficult, people should make the most out of the time they have with the people they love most and make time for those people.

Family Members Have Different Connections
"And the face in the picture was extremely gaunt. But I knew right away. There was no doubt. It was Chris. I went home, picked up Michele, my wife, and drove out to Maryland to tell Dad and Billie. I didn't know what I was going to say. How do you tell someone that their child is dead?" (Krakauer 102).
Topic: The Dynamics of Family
Family recognizes family no matter what the circumstance is. For many, there is a special connection between themselves and other family members. For parents, I cannot begin to fathom the difficulty of facing the loss of one of their children. No parent should have to go through such a terrible thing. To receive the news that your child has passed would destroy any parent due to the special connection created between the child and its parents. When something devastating happens, a person has two options: The person can either completely fall off the face of the planet and not face reality, or that person can be a strong individual and be there for the people that person loves the most. This is when family is most important in my opinion; in times when things seem like they will never be good again. In times when hope seems to be non existent. Its times like these when family needs to come together and be there for the people they care most about.

More Than Just a Bag of Rice
"Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten pound bag of rice . . . Alex's cheap leather hiking boots were neither waterproof nor insulated . . . His rifle was .22 caliber" (Krakauer 5).
Topic: Travel Advice
When traveling into the wild, I recommend taking something more than just a bag of rice as your food supply. Flint and knife should be taken, for starters. A stronger rifle than .22 caliber should be taken as well to kill larger animals to eat and live off of. An ax, snowshoes, and a compass should be taken with you on your journey into the snowy and icy terrain of Alaska. A small tent with easy set up should be packed along with a thermal sleeping bag for the cruel nights in Alaska that can drop to sub 30 degrees F. People watch documentaries of the beauty of Alaska, but what they do not realize is that mother nature can be very cruel. Nights in Alaska can be deadly, if the right gear is not packed. People see these documentaries and think to themselves, "That looks beautiful, I'm going to go live off of the land in nature", but these people are not capable of realizing the reality of the wild; it is dangerous and unpredictable. A voyage into the wild takes weeks even months of planning and preparation.
